Who's got the beat? WOMEN GOT THE BEAT!

Welcome to Women Got The Beat where we shine a light on powerful female rockers in the music industry throughout the years. From 1950s icons like Doris Day to 2000s punk rock legends like Avril Lavigne, each blog post will pay respect to the impact these powerful women have made in the music industry.

Fun Fact: The title of this blog was inspired by the song "We Got the Beat" by the Go-Go's, an all-girls rock band.

Blog posts will be posted once a week over the course of 8 weeks. During these 8 weeks, I will be actively engaging with you guys, the audience, on both my Twitter and Instagram. Make sure you follow both accounts so you can keep up with new posts.

Of course, not every female artist can be represented on this blog over the course of 8 weeks. With that being said, the women I chose to write about were carefully handpicked by me after doing extensive research on their work and what kind of message they send to the public. In addition, I wanted to pick artists that “shaped” their female rock generation as well as still holding some sort of relevance today.

About Me

Hi guys! My name is Claire Baugh and I am a senior Communication Studies (Digital Media) Major at Longwood University. I've been a certified radio DJ for 3 years now and I have my own radio show/podcast called "Claire on the Air".  My live shows are every Monday night at 7:00 pm where I play country and rock hits. In addition, my podcast is anything and everything music. In the past, I’ve had guests come on and talk about the top five favorite songs that mean the most to them, and most recently I recorded an episode with a friend about conspiracy theories in the music industry.

I created this blog because I have such a strong passion for rock music. In addition, I am a huge advocate for female empowerment. This blog is the perfect opportunity for me to merge these two things I’m passionate about and share it with my audience. Often times in the music industry, female artists are sexualized and have a very controlled image that overlooks their talents. My goal is to focus on what the artists as individuals bring to the table. Rock is a genre that typically rebels from societal norms and therefore the people involved face a lot of backlash from the public. I want to share the hardships these women faced but their willingness to stand up for what they believe in, making them legends and role models.

My interest in music history started when I took a class called “History of Rock” my freshman year of college. What caught my attention was how each generation of rock artists paved way for the next generation. I hope to be able to convey this concept throughout my blog. It’s important to know how we got here and give respect to the women that made it possible.
